How to Start Crossdressing: A Practical Guide for Beginners
I started crossdressing relatively late compared to some people — I was in my early twenties when I first put on a full outfit and looked at myself in the mirror. I had no guide, no community, and no idea what I was doing. This is the article I wish I'd had when I started.
Start Simple: Underwear First
The easiest and most private starting point is underwear. Buying a pair of women's panties is low commitment, easy to hide, and a good way to feel out whether crossdressing feels right for you without investing a lot of money or making anything permanent. Start with cotton or lace — something that feels distinctly feminine in texture. Sizing is easy: women's underwear sizing often corresponds directly to hip measurements, which you can find on any brand's size chart. This is genuinely where most people start, and there's nothing wrong with staying here for a while as you figure out what you want.
Sizing and Shopping Online
Sizing is the most practical challenge for anyone new to crossdressing who wasn't assigned female at birth. A few guidelines that have helped me:
- Measure everything. Chest, waist, and hips. Women's sizing is based on these three measurements. Write them down and keep them somewhere accessible before you start shopping.
- Size up on tops and dresses. Shoulders tend to be broader, so going one size up from what the measurements suggest on tops usually gives a better fit.
- Shoes are usually 1.5–2 sizes larger than your men's shoe size when converting to women's. US men's 9 = approximately US women's 10.5–11.
- Thigh-highs are sized by height and weight, not shoe or clothing size. Follow the brand's specific size chart.
- Shop online first. It's private, the return policies are usually good, and you have time to figure out what you like without pressure.
Building a First Wardrobe
You don't need everything at once. A practical first crossdressing wardrobe that covers a lot of ground:
- 2–3 pairs of underwear in different styles (brief, thong, hipster)
- A comfortable bralette or soft bra
- One pair of thigh-highs — these are my personal favorite and make any outfit feel more complete
- One simple dress or skirt — something you can wear around the house privately to get comfortable
- A collar if power exchange is part of why you're interested in crossdressing
Resist the urge to buy everything immediately. I made that mistake and ended up with clothes that didn't fit, didn't suit me, and just sat in a bag. Buy less, wear what you have, and add things gradually once you know what you actually enjoy wearing.
Makeup: Start With One Thing
If you want to explore makeup, start with exactly one product: lip color. Lipstick or lip gloss is the fastest way to see a visible change in how you look, it washes off immediately, and it requires no tools or technique. Once you're comfortable with that, add eyeliner — a basic black pencil liner on the upper lash line makes a significant difference with minimal skill required. Foundation and full makeup come later, after you've built comfort with the basics. YouTube has endless tutorials; search specifically for "makeup for beginners assigned male at birth" for content that addresses the specific differences in approach.
Privacy and Safety
If you're not out about crossdressing, privacy matters. Keep things in a separate bag or box that's clearly yours. Shop from accounts that won't have overtly feminine packaging delivered to your address — most mainstream lingerie retailers use discreet packaging now. Delete browser history if you share devices. And when you're ready to dress more fully, give yourself time alone without the pressure of someone walking in — the first few times are emotionally significant and you want space to experience them properly.
When It Clicks
There will be a moment — and I think almost everyone who crossdresses experiences this — where you look in the mirror and something clicks. Where you look like yourself in a way you haven't before. For me it was looking at my reflection in a full Lolita dress for the first time and feeling like a missing piece had just been found. That moment is worth all the awkward early tries. Be patient with yourself getting there.
